22 Bowen's - Newport, RI

Lunch over a three hour period usually means you’re working hard at the office on a huge proposal that absolutely needs to get done “today”. In fact in most cases, the legend of the three hour lunch is largely considered a myth. But for a select few, Saturday, September 12, 2009 was a lunch to rival all others. It was a lunch of such epic proportions that when it was over, we stared at each other in disbelief, wondering where the time went.

Ok, so maybe that was a little dramatic.

This past Saturday Melissa, my mother and my brother Justin and I dined at 22 Bowen’s in Newport, RI. Melissa and I decided that it would be a great idea
to take them to a pre-wedding lunch to celebrate as a “family to be” since the wedding is taking place this Friday in Aruba and they can’t attend. What an incredible idea this turned out to be. I could gush for days about how much we loved the restaurant. From the welcoming hostess right down to the attentive and entertaining server, we enjoyed everything they had to offer.

Please do yourself a favor and eat at 22 Bowen’s as soon as possible. It’s on the pricier side but it’s Newport after all and it’s completely worth the extra scratch. East Coast oysters on the half shell, sirloin Thai satay and corn and crab chowder for the table just to get us started. Followed by velvety scallops and risotto for Melissa, the 22B burger for mom and Justin enjoyed the mountainous lobster salad roll. If I hadn’t ordered my own delicious dish, I’m sure I would have tried to scrounge off one of their plates. Being in a seafood mood - and quite frankly who wouldn’t be when you’re dinning on the dock overlooking beautiful Newport Harbor and the many multi-million dollar yachts - I opted for wild mussels in a garlic, shallot, heavy cream and white wine sauce with a side of expertly grilled asparagus with hollandaise.

Now that your mouth is watering let me finish things off with dessert, which seemed to be either house made or brought in from an amazing local bakery. Whatever the case may be, I’m a fan. Here’s what we had: Key Lime pie as big as your head with a buttery graham cracker crust, New York style cheesecake as creamy as can be, crunchy creme brulee hovering over a silky smooth custard and a massive slice of carrot cake complete with pineapple chunks, coconut shavings and walnuts held together by layers of scrumptious cream cheese frosting.

We walked off our indulgence through the streets of Newport and even made a stop by our favorite store, Green Envy. Add this to your list of "musts" when visiting Newport and tell Rachel that Bob and Melissa sent you. It may not get you a discount... in fact it may get you kicked out. Just kidding.

As you may be able to tell, I really enjoyed lunch. Not just because of the amazing dining experience or the time spent shopping but because of the people I shared the day with. It's important to create memories and enjoy time with the people you love. In today's world of hustle and bustle... sometimes a three hour lunch is a good thing.
